Assessment and Retrieval Testing

At Mossbourne Fobbing Academy, we use regular retrieval practice to help students remember and retain the knowledge they learn in lessons. Research shows that frequent low-stakes testing strengthens long-term memory and helps students become more confident learners.

Subject Curriculum Time Knowledge Organiser Testing
Subjects taught 4 or more times per week (e.g. English, Mathematics and Science) One Knowledge Organiser test each week, typically 10–15 questions.
Languages and Humanities One Knowledge Organiser test each week, typically 10 questions.
PE, Art, Technology and Performing Arts One Knowledge Organiser test every fortnight, typically 10 questions.

Knowledge Organiser tests help students retain key knowledge and vocabulary over time. Students are informed in advance which section of their Knowledge Organiser to revise and are expected to achieve at least 80%. Students who do not meet this standard will be supported to revise and retake the assessment.

Our Expectations

  • Tests are standardised within departments to ensure consistency.
  • Students are expected to achieve 80% or above.
  • In some lower prior-attainment groups, the expected threshold may be adjusted to 60% where appropriate.
  • Students who do not meet the expected standard will be given a further opportunity to demonstrate secure knowledge.
  • Progress is reviewed so that staff can identify where additional support may be required.

Supporting Learning at Home

Parents and carers can play an important role in helping students succeed by encouraging regular, short revision sessions using Knowledge Organisers.

Useful strategies include:

  • Cover and recall
  • Self-quizzing
  • Flashcards
  • Testing key vocabulary aloud
  • Short, frequent revision sessions rather than cramming

Why This Matters

Our aim is simple: to ensure students remember the most important knowledge from their learning so that they can apply it confidently in lessons, assessments and future study.

Through regular retrieval practice, we help students develop stronger habits of independent learning, improve long-term retention and achieve greater academic success.
